It Doesn’t Take “Discipline”

So many people say about my almost-daily Aikido training, “You must be so disciplined to train as consistently as you do!” But no, it’s not that at all. It takes no more discipline for me to train than it would take “discipline” to eat pizza every night for dinner (gluten-free, of course). I don’t do it because I am determined or mentally tough, I do it because I love it, because it enlivens me and nourishes me. I wake up excited that I get to go to the dojo again that night. There hasn’t been a single day I didn’t want to go train, and not a single day I regretting having done so.

That’s what I wish for you – to find activities you love, that call to you. Something that gets you out of bed in the morning, excited, again and again. Maybe for you it’s belly dancing, surfing, yoga, kayaking, hiking, trail running, snowboarding, folk dancing, swimming … There are endless possibilities.

If you find yourself thinking “Oh darn, that’s right… *sigh* I really should go to _____ today,” then keep looking; you haven’t found it yet. But it’s out there. Keep looking.

Alignment within ourselves, both physically and in terms of integrity, makes everything flow more easily.

When things are going badly, when you are experiencing effort and struggle over something, look for where things are out of alignment. Physically, might you be using incorrect posture or form? Emotionally, are you working at something that’s inconsistent with your principles or priorities, maybe because you “should” do it, even though it’s not really you?
